Creating Real Hope for Change: Building Struggle and the ISO in the Obama Era

After only a year into office President Obama has failed to deliver on virtually any of the promises he made on the campaign trail. Unemployment and foreclosures have grown and social services and education are being cut, causing the basic struggle to make ends meet for the American working class harder and harder. All the while, the Obama administration has handed over $13 trillion to Wall Street and has proposed another $789 billion yearly military budget to escalate the occupation of Afghanistan.

In response, millions of Americans have become frustrated with the Democratic Party and the priorities of our society and are looking for an alternative to the corporate status quo. This situation has created an opportunity for right-wing fake populists, like recently-elected Massachusetts Senator, Scott Brown, to ride into office on anti-Washington sentiment.

Nonetheless, struggles for social and economic justice have begun to emerge in the past year. From a new Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) civil rights movement that mobilized over 250,000 people for the recent National Equality March in Washington, D.C., to the struggle against budget cuts in higher public education that has erupted in California and other areas across the country, to the struggles to fight back against and prevent home foreclosures, beacons of genuine hope for change have emerged.

In this context, the need for a socialist alternative to the corporate status quo, and for more socialists to be engaged in the struggles of today, has become ever more important. Join the Boston Branch of the International Socialist Organization to discuss building the socialist movement and the ISO in the Obama Era.
