Thurs, 7/8, ISO Organizing Meeting

Politics from below: building the ISO in Boston
7pm, Haymarket People's Fund, 42 Seaverns Ave, JP (map)

This week's ISO meeting discussions will focus on building the ISO through use of Socialist Worker and contact work.  The proposal is to begin with a discussion about the state of politics at this point in the Obama Administration.  Please read SocialistWorker.org's excellent editorial, "Is the Obama Administration unraveling?" to ground the discussion.  (It is available here: http://socialistworker.org/2010/06/30/obama-presidency-unraveling)  The piece makes the case for a "politics from below"--the politics of ordinary people and need for our struggles to win the justice that is needed in immigrant rights, housing, civil rights, LGBT rights, etc.

Secondly, we need to discuss Socialist Worker--our print newspaper and our website--tools for the building of a socialist current at the heart of those struggles.  We need to discuss the role of SW for our own education, our use in movements, how we can organize SW tablings, etc.

Lastly, we need to discuss contact work--working with people who are interested in joining the ISO's project.  This will involve a discussion about why we pursue dialogues with individuals beyond larger group discussions, and how to do contact work.

The proposed agenda is:

1. Discussion of "Is the Obama Administration unraveling?" (30 mins)
2. Socialist Worker and our use of it in Boston (40 mins)
3. Contact work (40 mins)
